When you have hardwood flooring installed in your home, it comes with a finish, or a stain, that protects the wood from contaminants and bacteria. But as life happens and your floors get dinged, scratched or damaged, the finish on your wood can begin to lose its effectiveness. Sealing is important for preserving the longevity of your floors, and if you’re wondering whether or not it’s time for you to complete a redo job, we at Emerson Carpet One in Baton Rouge have an easy, DIY, at-home solution for you to be sure: the water droplet test.

Water is a great way of testing whether or not your floors need to be refinished or if they could just use a good polish and cleaning to get out come nicks. For the test, drip a little water onto your floor.
If the water immediately soaks in, your floor is in need of refinishing since everything is being absorbed into the floor.
If the water slowly soaks in after a few minutes, this is a sign that your finish is in the beginning stages of losing effectiveness.
If the water stays in a bead on top and does not soak in, your floor is still in good condition and has a proper seal.
