What Types of Hardwood Floors Are There?

Hardwood flooring is crafted from traditional and exotic tree species.

Among our most popular options are:

  • Acacia
  • Oak
  • Hickory
  • Maple
  • Teak
  • Mahogany

A general rule of thumb: each hardwood species is unique in hardness and abilities. For the best results, we advise choosing a remarkably stable hardwood that can resist moisture in the air. Maple, oak, and hickory woods are all exceptional choices.

Is Engineered Hardwood Real Wood?

Our hardwood experts can help you make the most intelligent choices based on your style, budget, and space.

  • Engineered hardwood flooring is made of layers of wood that are laminated and fused. These layers have a cross-ply pattern for maximum strength and durability. Engineered hardwood is more affordable since you only pay the premium price for the top layers. It’s a very functional yet versatile choice. For most of us, engineered hardwood flooring is the winner, as it's designed to manage humidity and moisture like a champ.

  • Solid hardwood flooring is made up of solid planks of wood. Planks come in various lengths and widths, ranging from three inches to as much as twelve inches or more. These planks are formed with grooved edges, so the wood stays tight after installation. Solid hardwood flooring isn’t advised in high moisture areas like bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements since it is prone to expansion and contraction with changing moisture levels.

Where Can I Install Hardwood Floors?

Hardwood flooring is undoubtedly beautiful but needs to be carefully vetted before you install it.

It needs to be avoided in the kitchen or bathroom. For solid hardwood flooring, ensure your space has a consistent relative humidity level. Engineered hardwood is an excellent alternative if you have a large family and a busy schedule.

We recommend professional flooring installation for the best outcome, regardless of which type of floors you choose.

Can I Have Hardwood Floors in Our Humid Climate?

Short answer: YES! But we recommend engineered hardwood floors for life in Louisiana. Here's why

Hardwood flooring can absorb the moisture present in the air, causing it to swell up or shrink when humidity levels rise and fall. Constant swelling and shrinking over time can seriously damage hardwood floors.

Here are some easy tips to ensure the best results as the years pass.

  • Acclimation – Allow your new flooring plenty of time to adjust to your home’s humidity levels before being professionally installed.

  • Professional Installation – A tight (but not too tight) fit between floor planks ensures against future damage. This painstaking process is best achieved by working with a seasoned professional.

  • Climate Control- Make sure environmental conditions in your home are conducive to healthy wood flooring. Use a de-humidifier or multiple portable de-humidifiers around your home to keep moisture levels within reason.

Do I Need to Refinish My Hardwood Floor?

Is it time to refinish your hardwood floor? How can you be sure? Water is an excellent way of testing if your floors need refinishing or a simple polish and cleaning.

For the test, drip a little water onto your floor.

  • If the water immediately soaks in, your floor needs refinishing.

  • If the water slowly soaks in within minutes, your finish is in beginning to lose effectiveness.

  • If the water stays in a bead on top and does not soak in, your floor is still in good condition and has a proper seal.
